Guns for Everyone?

After Orlando, I thought about it again, and I still think it’s a shitty idea. So I wrote about it.

The way I see it, the only purpose of a firearm is to project/expel a bullet towards a target, usually with devastating results. When someone decides to carry a firearm, they are essentially saying that they are prepared to fire/project a bullet towards a target/person whenever they deem it necessary. This could include a number of reasons, varying from feeling that they are in danger, or perhaps suicide, or anger etc. And of course, nobody can predict when that decision to use a firearm will take place. Unless firearms disappear completely, it’s just a matter of time before someone decides to use one. And if everyone owns a gun, it doesn’t actually make the world safer, it just increases the chances of firearm use. The thing that I find most unusual is the almost hypnotic state with which people defend the right to carry firearms, almost like a religion, and totally unquestionable, it is truly quite remarkable. For me, eradicating guns everywhere (improbable scenario) is still the the way forward.

Erm, ja. You compare the USA to South Africa, then ask that it should be more difficult to get a gun in the USA. Sort of like in South Africa, where we need to apply for licences and all.

Except that nobody in their right minds look at South Africa as a shining example of how we managed to reduce gun violence, or for that matter any kind of violence.
